Tucson hip-hop fave Coupe Deville makes his way up the I-10 for a Sunday sesh at GreenPharms Studios.
TEMPE, Ariz.—It was just another hazy Sunday at GreenPharms Studios, when Coupe Deville showed up to drop some bars. After tracking a couple of spontaneous verses, Coupe took a seat at the bar to dab and discuss life in the Tucson hip-hop scene.
In the interview, Coupe DeVille delved into his roots, creative process, and passion for music. Originally from St. Louis, Coupe moved to Tucson at 14 and eventually found his way into the hip-hop scene in his early 20s, influenced by a close friend. Over the years, he’s become deeply connected to Arizona, considering himself an “honorary Arizonian.”
Coupe’s approach to music is intertwined with his love for cannabis, particularly indica strains, which he finds instrumental in his writing process. He enjoys experimenting with different strains and frequently switches up his choices, never sticking to one for too long.
His preference for indicas extends to his consumption of edibles and pre-rolls, which he favors for their relaxing effects. He specifically made mention of his appreciation for pre-rolls like Caviar Gold’s “CAVI CONES,” highlighting his flexible approach to cannabis consumption.
When discussing his musical journey, Coupe emphasized the significance of inspiring others. For him, the ultimate goal as an artist is to touch people’s lives through music. He values the connection he forms with his audience and finds it incredibly rewarding when fans relate to his work on a deep level. This connection fuels his ongoing passion for music, keeping him motivated despite the challenges.
Coupe also reflected on the importance of humility and hard work in the industry. He believes that success comes from a place of authenticity and perseverance, rather than entitlement. The hip-hop and cannabis communities in Tucson and Phoenix have provided him with a supportive network, which he values greatly.
He acknowledged that the cannabis industry, despite its commercial aspects, is built on relationships and mutual support, much like the music scene.
Looking ahead, Coupe expressed excitement about his upcoming projects, including several new singles slated for release throughout the summer. He’s performing in Tucson for the first time in four years, marking a significant moment in his career as he re-engages with the local scene. Coupe is also working towards a potential 20-city tour, aiming to expand his reach beyond Arizona.
Coupe’s grounded perspective, combined with his passion for music and cannabis, paints a picture of an artist who is deeply committed to his craft and community.
He continues to push boundaries, both creatively and geographically, while staying true to the values that have guided him from the beginning. As he puts it, he’s still hungry—driven by the love of music and the desire to connect with others through his art.
